DAVID LOEB - LANDSCAPE
DAVID LOEB, PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST, a film by Daniel Cotard
In my landscape paintings, I attempt to seize fleeting moments when light and form shift, space both flattens and deepens, time simultaneously quickens and slows, and nature turns strangely unreal. The nocturnes are glimpses into a realm of solitary twilight. The pictures hover between fact and dream, between clarity and enigma, between substance and light. In combining such seemingly-irreconcilable forces, I seek to invoke eerie beauty, hidden meaning and mystery.
I share a strong affinity with European and American visionaries including Courbet, Whistler, Blakelock, Inness, Hammershøi, Seurat, Vuillard, Bonnard, and Klimt.

Born in 1953, I grew up in Chappaqua, New York. My mother and her identical twin were both painters. I studied Fine Arts at Cornell, Yale, Boston, and Indiana Universities. In 1985, I received a Fulbright Grant to study Chartres Cathedral and Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Since then, I have divided my time between France and the US. In 1993, I was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. I have taught at the New York Academy of Art and at Parsons School of Design, Paris. I exhibit on both sides of the Atlantic and currently live with my wife, ceramist Anne Servanton-Loeb, between Fontainebleau and Franche-Comté, France.
